That is too long of a time gap for both you 2 AND your guests. What in the world are people supposed to do for those "5" or so hours inbetween? What are "YOU" gonna do for those 5 hrs?
Alot of guests may be very put off by this, feeling as though you're expecting EVERYBODY to wait around this ENTIRE day for 'you'...
And what sort of fun are you going to be offering your guests (who just had to wait ALLLL day for the reception) with only one hour of dancing after all those speeches that probably only 3% of your guests care to hear in the first place.
I was just recently AT a wedding/recept where the speeches drug on FOREVER! Guests were actually LEAVING in the middle of them...best man, 2 MOH + a letter read from an absent due to "went into labor" BM, mom of bride, dad of groom, grandparents (TWO sets!) for the bride, grandmother of groom, plus someone that I don't even KNOW what the relation was.....it was SO BORING!!! Even the bride and groom I think were a little put off by all these speeches.
If there's NO other options for changing your reception times to try to make it longer (ie-5 to ?)...then you may SERIOUSLY want to change your ceremony time to a later one -at least to 3 or 4 pm?--still may leave 2-3 hrs to kill but that's not a BAD as 5!
My ceremony is at 3 w/my reception starting at 5-dinner PROMPTLY at 5:30. We're having both at my parents farmhouse therefore there's no "travelling" from place to place. We're using the hour or so inbetween the end of the ceremony and the beginning of the recep as our "cocktail hour" while the finishing preparations are being set up (food wise) in the party/wedding tent we purchased for the recept. We will also be mingling w/the guests during this time as well.
This way...there's not an "all day" wait, things will seem to move fluidly, and they will not have to also sit around for an additional hour or so waiting for dinner to be served once the recept has started.
