Question: Hello! So i am a 19-year-old currently in college. I exercise around 5-6 days a week, giving the proper muscles rest and doing cardio/aerobics. I eat almost spotless as well. I am sticking around 2.1k-2.3k calories, depending in the day. Yet, with all this said and done i cannot seem to get abs. I look like im in shape with cut up arms and shoulders, but my chest and abs are weak and flabby looking even though i work those out pretty intensely. Any suggestions on why i cannot get abs and/or chest? Also my sleep pattern is doing pretty well too, a few nights i might lack of an hour or 2 based on an 8 hour schedule but thats part of college so please dont tell me to sleep more haha :P thank you!

Hi, here are a few tips to get you started 1. Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened but fresh fruits have natural sugars. When you eat fruit, you are taking in a lot of fiber, which is needed by the body, and fruits of course are an excellent source of vitamins. 2. If you do have a craving for fruit juice then go for fresh fruit juice instead of these that contain artificial flavors and colors. Or even better, try making your own fruit juice taking care not to sweeten it with too many calories. 3. Choose fresh fruit to processed fruits. Processed and canned fruits do not have as much fiber as fresh fruit and processed and canned fruits are nearly always sweetened. 4. Increase your fiber intake. Like I mentioned, the body needs a lot of fiber. So try to include in your diet as many fruits and vegetables as you can. 5. Go crazy on vegetables. Vegetables are your best bet when it comes to losing pounds. Nature has a terrific spread when it comes to choosing vegetables. And the leafy green vegetables are your best bet. Try to include a salad in you diet always. 6. Eat intelligently. The difference between man and beast is that we are driven by intelligence while beasts are driven by instinct. Don’t just eat something because you feel like eating it. Ask you’re self whether your body really needs it. 7. Watch what you eat. Keep a watchful eye on every thing that goes in. Sometimes the garnishes can richer than the food itself. Accompaniments too can be very rich. Remember that it is the easiest thing in the world to eat something without realizing that it was something that you should not have eaten. Selective memory you know’ 8. Control that sweet tooth. Remember that sweet things generally mean more calories. It is natural that we have cravings for sweet things especially chocolates and other confectionery. u shold use that bike/tredmill for about a half hr a day at least..and maybe do other exercises...i use an eliptical and i also lift weights mon-thur..and ive been losing o10-15 lbs a month... make sure u eat healthy to..eat alot of fruits and veggies and only lean mean(Chicken and Fish)

Excellent question...I am a MS in Ex. Sci., and a CSCS (strength coach)...The best way to accomplish what you desire is definitely through hard work at the gym and a proper diet. The reason why informed people take protein shakes/bars is that maintaining a proper diet is very difficult for many people, due to lack of time, travel, etc...in this case protein supplements can be very helpful. That being said, protein supplementation (extra protein) can be useful if you desire to build extra lean muscle, but only to a certain extent, if you take in too much protein (or carb, or fat, any calorie(s)) it (they) will be stored as fat in the body...Another thing to thing to consider is creatine suppements, I have seen many people on here trash creatine without knowing what they were writing. NO study has definitively shown liver damage, dehydration, or other side-effects. You can go to a good research site, such as the NSCA site or the ASMI site and find AMPLE amount of research claiming creatine has only beneficial effects. Finally, as stated earlier, the best, most proven method to build lean body mass and reduce body fat is through hard (and proper) gym work and a strict diet. You made a great start by asking a question, keep asking and keep learning...hope this helped a bit

Supplements are to be used in place of meals, hence the word "supplement". You are, in fact, supplementing thos meals for the real thing in a crunch. Now, my personal beleifs are that an average person cannot get enought protein in their diet without taking in too many calories, if they are maintaining a strict workout regime or 45 minutes high impact training 1-2 times daily. Mostly, what you're referring to by the "unnatural look" is people who are using steroids. I've yet to see the person that was training naturally who carried that look you are speaking of. If you don't beleive me, take a muscle mag from anytime in the 1950's and peek through it. The men in the magazine will be proportionate and agreeable to the normal person. Now, just ahead 15yrs to 1975 and look at the physiques... HUGE difference. It just so happens that the introduction of steroids took off in the 60's. I don't beleive in coincidence... My personal opinion on the subject at hand, get a protein supplement and take 80-100 grams a day by way of that. No other supplement is needed.
