Question: Hey, guys. I need some help solving these two problems here. Thanks. 1. Use the given condition to write an equation for the line in slope-intercept form. Passing through (-2,6) and prependicular to the line whose equation is y=5/2x+1 2. Find the slope-intercept form of the line with the given slope and y-intercept.

A line has a general slope-intercept form of: y = mx + b where m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept. In your given line, the slope, m, is 5/2. So a line perpendicular to this will have a slope of -1/m, or -2/5. So we need to write a new equation where m = -2/5, which crosses the given point x = -2, y = 6: 6 = (-2/5)(-2) + b b = 6 - 4/5 b = 26/5 So the equation is: y = (-2/5)x + 26/5

Point slope form is y-y1=m(x-x1) so you take your points (4,-2) and (0,3) and find the slope which is also m. slope is y2-y1/x2-x1 which would be (3-(-2)) / (0-4) this equals -5/4. Your slope is -5/4 Pick a point. It doesn't matter which one. Its safer to go with the positive point for no errors. Lets pick (0,3) plug this point into the formula above, use 0 as x1 and 3 as y1. This is how it would look. y-3= -5/4(x-0) Slope intercept form is y=mx+b. We already found slope to be -5/4 so go to the previous formula and fix it to look like this formula. y-3= -5/4x+0. add the 3 to both sides to have y by itself. y= -5/4x + 3. this is your answer in slope intercept form. For standard form take the slope intercept form y= -5/4x + 3 and rearrange i to ax + by = c. add 5/4 to both sides to cancel it out so 3 can be alone. this would be 5/4x+y=3. This needs to be fixed to not have a fraction. So divide everything by 4. (4)5/4x+(4)y=(4)3. The fours cancel in the fraction leaving 5x + 4y =12. So point slope form is y-3= -5/4(x-0) Slope intercept form is y= -5/4x+3 Standard form is 5x +4y=12 I hope this helped! :)
