You are correct to where you get 5+12/4. At this point, you do division first because of order of operations. So the next step is 5+3. Then you get 8.

#1 is right... good job. However, there's a lot wrong... when you see a number right next to an x, it means that the number and x are multiplied together. you can't subtract that number, you have to divide that number. so lets say you have 3x=15 you do not subtract 3 to get 12... instead, you divide 3 to get 5. understand? it's a little more complicated if you have that and a number added or subtracted from x. lets look at #9... 15=3x-12 Here, the order matters. you have to do the addition or subtraction FIRST. then do the division. so first we'll add 12 to each side. that makes it 27=3x. then you divide 3 from each side to get 9=x. make sense? go try that and post again and I'll check to make sure you're doing it right.

1. 8 = x +17 17-8 = x -9 = x 2. 6x = - 18 x = -18/6 x = - 3 3. 4x - 13 = 7 4x = 7 +13 x = 20/4 x = 5 4. 15 = 2 x + 3 15-3 = 2 x 12/2 = x 6 = x 5. 8x +15 = 7 8 x = 7 - 15 8x = - 8 x = -1 6. 6 = 3 x +27 6 -27 = 3 x -21 = 3 x -21/3 = x - 7 = x 7. 10 = 15- 5M 10-15 = -5M - 5 = -5 M 1 = M 8. 12 + 2x = - 14 2 x = - 14-12 2 x = -26 x = -26/2 x = -13 9. 15 = 3 x -12 15 +12 = 3 x 27 = 3x 27/3 = x 9 = x 10. 24 = 18 + 3x 24-18 = 3 x 6 = 3x 6/3 = x 2 = x
