Topic: Singapore Math Level 4A Word Problem Utilizing Only Knowledge of Common Multiples & Common Factors to Solve.?**Question:**
Mr. Ching wants to give a group of his violin students some reward stickers. If he gives each student 3 stickers, he will have 75 stickers left. If he gives each student 6 stickers, he will need 30 more stickers. a) How many students are there in Mr. Ching's violin group? b) How many reward stickers does he have?

3 times the number of students = 75+30 because in order to give each student 3 additional stickers he will use all 75 of the stickers he would have left and still need 30 additional stickers. 3x=75+30 3x=105 x=105/3=35 There are 35 students in his class. After giving each student 3 stickers, he has 75 left. He started with 35*3+75, or 180 stickers. _/

Ok, the first step is to find the factors of both numbers. Factors=numbers that we multiply together to get a particular number. Factors of 54? 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18, 27, 54 Factors of 60? 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60 The next step: What factors do they have in common? 1, 2, 6, 9 The last step: What number is the greatest? Answer= 6 The greatest common factor is 6

I cant do the first one but to find the highest common factor you find the factors of both 54 and 60 and the number of which both occurs most is the highest common factor! FOR EXAMPLE: the factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 and that the factors of 40 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20 and 40. The numbers 1, 2, 4 and 8 appear in both lists, so they are known as the common factors of 24 and 40. The number 8 is the highest of them, and it is called the highest common factor (HCF).

Hi. There is something missing from 4-5x-10x , it needs to equal something. It can be simplified to 4-15x if that is what you are looking for. 6 is a factor in both 54 and 60

call the number of stickers = x the number of students = s The word problem sets up the equations: 3 s = x -75 (3 for each student is equal to the stickers less 75) 6s = x+30 (6 for each is equal to the stickers plus 30) Solve by method of choice, I set each x = then solve x = 3s + 75 x = 6s - 30 solve! 3s+75 = 6s - 30 3s = 105 s = 35 35 students and 180 reward stickers.. check! =)
