Topic: Need help with Algebra!?
June 16, 2019 / By Charity Question:
ok well to get one thing straight, IM NOT ASKING FOR THE ANSWER, i just honestly don't get these problems
"The difference of the squares of two consecutive even intergers is 52".
"A poster is 3 inches longer than it is wide. It is placed in a frame that has a uniform width of 2 inches. The area of the frame alone is 84 inches. Find the dimensions of the poster (Write equation + solve)"
the second one isn't so bad but i still don't get either of them. can someone explain them to me, or at least of of them?

Consecutive numbers means that they are beside each other - and if they are even...example: 2, 4, 6, 8, etc.
So - your poster width expression would be (width) w + 3 = l (length). The area would be the width times the length - (w+3) * (w) = a (area). Plug in your variables with the numbers you have from reading the problem, and solve.
I hope this helps, and good luck!!
Que 1 - (x + 2)^2 - x^2 = 52
x^2 + 4x + 4 - x^2 = 52
x+1 = 13
x = 12
Two nos are 12 and 14.
Dimensions of poster are x and x+3
Dimensions of frame alongwith poster are (x+4) and (x+7)
Area of frame,
x^2 + 11x +28 -x^2-3x = 84
Dimensions of poster are 7 and 10.
Solve for x
second even number is of course 12-2=10

I would suggest asking a math-oriented friend, teacher, or tutor to give you word problems. Your assignment would be only to set up the problem into equations, not solve it. If you cannot translate it at all, ask them to show you step-by-step. Then, on a clean sheet of paper, try doing it yourself. It's not that hard, just don't be afraid of it. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, either, that's how we learn.
Here's a sample for you. Mary bought a box of 25 candy bars for $9. What was the price of each bar? I know, you can probably reason it out, but set it up as an equation with P being what you seek, the price of an individual bar.
