Question: I'm applying for a job at FYE. I've never had a job before so this is all I had. Please tel me if I should change or improve anything! Dear Hiring Manager, I’m writing to show interest in the sales associate position at your store. Though I have never had any job experience, I believe my familiarity with music and movies will be a good asset. I have many hours of volunteer experience logged in and I’m familiar with customer service. (I've also included my contact into but will not include it here)

Did you have to write a cover letter? If not, good for you for showing some genuine initiative to impress!! I don't think they will be particular on this, but you will be interviewed if you are interested. A resume (i know you don't have any prior experience, but you can fill it with "honest fluff" showing your literacy and intelligence). I have interview questions that I use to impress my future employers, they are great. You want a copy? Good luck and Godspeed!! Email with just your name (NO OTHER CONTACT INFO PLEASE) and I will reply with the questions for you. My email should be on my yahoo profile.

Honestly, I wouldn't read this past the first couple of sentences. The cover letter is your golden opportunity to tell the employer why they should hire you over the other applicants. These generic kinds of statements don't do that. Every cover letter should be customized to the job. Look at the posting and pick out three aspects and tell them how you're already good at that. For example, the posting might say that good customer service skills, organization and problem-solving are important aspects of the job. Give a real example of when you demonstrated good customer skills ("While a sales associate at XYZ Store, a customer was at the check-out and realized she had lost her wallet in the store. I helped her re-trace her steps and we found the wallet in the shoe department, with everything still in it. She was grateful for my assistance and concern, and became a regular customer as a result."), Then give a different example of your ability to organize ("At ABC Company, I provided support for a 20-member team. To be sure that everyone had the supplies they needed when they needed them, I created an inventory system for the supply closet.") Then give yet a third example of the other charactersic ("Part of my job at LMN Enterprises was to direct calls to the inside sales force of 12 people. Customers would get frustrated if I transferred them to a salesperson who was not in the office. I didn't want to lose customers, so I created an in/out board so I could immediately see who was in the office and available to take the call."). I might have 200 applicants for a job. To whittle that down to a manageable number to interview, I want to know that you can do the job. Giving me sepcific examples that speak to the job is going to get you there.

Honestly, no. All your statements are pretty generic and a bit too wordy. You're saying a lot without really SAYING anything about yourself. For which"opening position" are you applying? What makes you a unique candidate? What skills qualify you for the job? Why are you "an excellent fit for this opportunity?" Bottom line, if I read this cover letter, I'd think "this candidate has no idea why I should hire him/her."
